Ram + Magpie Community Garden Consultation

** IMPORTANT UPDATE **

We have found out from Tower Hamlets Council, that they are no longer willing to fund the proposed Ram & Magpie community gardens. The previous administration had originally committed £25,000 towards the project, but the new administration has decided not to support the project or grant the space to the farm.

This letter to stakeholders from the council, outlines their reasoning.

This is extremely disappointing news, on a number of levels.

  • Firstly, that the site will remain unused and unloved, attracting antisocial behaviour.

  • Secondly, that the vision developed with the community for the community will not be delivered and that over £50,000 of inward investment that the farm obtained from other funders will no longer be invested in the site. And finally,

  • The wasted time invested by the local community and the staff team in developing the concept and obtaining the strong support for its implementation.

Again, thank you for supporting the project either through the consultation events or just as an interested local resident. I am sorry to not have more positive news.

Best wishes,
Phil Nichols - Chief Executive

The project

We want your help to shape ideas for a new community garden in Spitalfields! Opening in 2022!

Spitalfields City Farm has recently won funding to create a new community garden in 2022. The farm, working together with the Mayor of London and Tower Hamlets Council will create a new green space on Buxton Street for the community.

We have appointed local businesses Spacehub and Soundings to help design the gardens with input from the community.

We will continue to update the designs based on community feedback throughout the Spring, with the gardens planned to open in Autumn this year.

The location of the proposed new garden is adjacent to Spitalfields City Farm & Allen Gardens on Buxton Street, it is currently hard-surfaced and under-used.

The site also neighbours local primary schools St Anne’s and Thomas Buxton.

We want to hear from you what type of space the gardens should be, and to reflect the character and community of the local area.

Don’t delay - Have your say !!!

Please share your thoughts in this space via our feedback form which can be returned via email to: or handed to a staff or volunteer member of Spitalfields City Farm (we’re open from Tuesday to Saturday).
